Creating a Resume

Definitions

A resume is a formal document that summarizes your skills, achievements, experiences, and education. You will likely be asked to submit a resume when you apply for college, a job, or even a volunteer position. Think of a resume as a formal introduction. This is your chance to highlight your strengths and qualifications. A resume helps you show why you are qualified or the right fit for an opportunity. Most resumes list your contact information, educational background, skills, relevant experiences (like previous employment or volunteer work), achievements, and references.

There are different types of resume formats to choose from when you are getting started. Here are the most common formats:

  • Chronological – lists educational and work experiences beginning with your most recent and continuing in descending order
  • Functional – focuses on skills and abilities, rather than past experiences
  • Targeted –highlights skills and experiences most relevant to the position; written for a specific job opening or opportunity
