Building Your Resume Task Analysis As you develop your first resume, you can use this task analysis to ensure you include all the necessary elements before submitting it to a job opportunity.
Getting Started 1. Complete the Writing a Resume EMPOWER VI Course for Students. This course provides detailed information about the resume that will help you as you create your own.
2. Gather the Information You Need to Write Your Resume
Your contact information Your school’s name and your expected graduation year A list of your skills, work-related experiences (including volunteer or leadership experiences), activities you’ve participated in, and awards you have received or been nominated for (Optional) A job posting for an opportunity you are interested in 3. Download the Accessible Resume Template
This is the same template that is linked in Lesson 4 of the Writing a Resume Course. When you select the link above, the template will go to the “downloads” folder on your computer Filling Out the Resume Template 1. Enter Your Contact Information
Your Name City, State Phone Number Email Address 2. (optional) Create a Summary
Write 2-3 sentences highlighting your skills, strengths, and goals 3. Include Your List of Skills
List two to four things you are good at doing (e.g., communication, time management, technical skill related to the job) Assistive technology can be added to this list 4. Fillin the Experience Section
For each experience, include:The position or your role The name of the organization The dates of when you worked there or were associated with the experience Three to five bullet points describing what you did or the skills you used 5. List Your Education
High School Name Grade or expected graduation year Your GPA (only include if it is 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or if it is specifically requested in the job description) 6. Add Activities and Awards

Did I complete each section? Did I include skills, even without paid work experience? Did I describe my experience clearly? Did I keep my formatting simple and consistent? (optional) Does my summary match the opportunity I am applying for? Have Someone Review Your Resume Before submitting, ask a friend or family member to review your resume for typos, visual formatting, and readability.
